Below is a list of the major awards the Honors Collegium coordinates. Please note, the chart lists the year an application is submitted: students will often need to begin working on the application 3-6 months prior to this deadline. Awards that require OSU nomination:

Beinecke Scholarship

  • http://www.beineckescholarship.org
  • 22 Beinecke Scholars are selected annually on the basis of superior standards of intellectual ability, scholastic achievement (3.7+ GPA), and personal promise. This award provides $32,000 towards graduate funding. Undergraduate students who plan to earn a terminal degree (PhD or MFA) in the arts, humanities, or social sciences should apply in their junior year. Candidates must also have a documented history of receiving need-based financial aid. OSU may forward one nominee for this award.

Carnegie Junior Fellows

  • The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace offers 8-10 one-year fellowships to uniquely qualified graduating seniors to work as research assistants to the Endowment's senior associates. Applicants should have a strong academic record (3.7+ GPA), research experience, and have completed a significant amount of course work in international affairs, political science, economics, history, Russian or Chinese studies. OSU may nominate up to 2 applicants for this award.

Churchill Scholarship

  • Churchill Scholarships fund one year of graduate study in engineering, mathematics and the sciences at the University of Cambridge. Fourteen scholarships are awarded annually. Competitive candidates have high achievement in academic work and GRE scores, significant research experience, demonstrated leadership, and concern for the critical problems of society. OSU may nominate up to 2 candidates for this award.

Fulbright U.S. Student Program

  • The Fulbright U.S. Student Program offers approximately 1,400 opportunities for students to study, research, or teach abroad while promoting cross-cultural interaction and mutual understanding. Candidates looking to study or conduct research abroad will need to develop an independent program proposal and secure an in-country affiliation.  Grants will fund project and living expenses for an 8-12 month period.  OSU will forward all students completing the application process.  If you are currently a graduate student and wish to apply for a Fulbright grant, please contact Bobbi Davis-Jones at the Graduate School.

Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship

  • The Goldwater Foundation awards 300 scholarships to sophomores and juniors demonstrating potential for success in a research career in the sciences, engineering, or mathematics.  Competitive students will have a high GPA (3.8+), research experience, and intend to pursue a PhD and research career. The scholarship awards $7,500 towards undergraduate expenses.  OSU will nominate 4 applicants for this award.

Marshall Scholarship

  • The Marshall Scholarship is awarded to 40 exceptional students, providing them with the opportunity to study for 2-3 years at any university in the United Kingdom. Scholars are selected on the basis of distinction of intellect (3.7+ GPA) and character, potential to significantly contribute to society, strong motivation and seriousness of purpose. OSU is not limited in our number of candidates, but usually nominates 2-3 students.

George J. Mitchell Scholarship

  • The US-Ireland Alliance awards 12 scholarships annually for one year of graduate study in Ireland or Northern Ireland. Applicants should be between the ages of 18 and 30, exhibit superior levels of academic achievement (3.7+ GPA), leadership, and community service.

Rhodes Scholarship

  • The Rhodes Trust selects 32 outstanding scholars each year on the basis of academic excellence, commitment to public service, moral character and leadership ability. Rhodes Scholars are selected for 2-3 years of study at the University of Oxford. Applicants must be between the ages of 18 and 24 and have received their bachelor’s degree prior to attending Oxford. OSU is not limited in our number of candidates, but usually nominates 2-3 students.

Harry S. Truman Scholarship

  • The Truman Foundation awards 75 scholarships to college juniors and leadership training in preparation for careers in public service. The scholarship provides up to $30,000 toward graduate studies and a 10-week Washington Summer Institute following graduation. Competitive applicants will have an extensive record of campus and community service, commitment to a career in public service, excellent communication skills, and a strong academic record (3.5 GPA). OSU may nominate up to 4 students for this award.

Morris K. Udall Undergraduate Scholarship

  • The Udall Foundation awards 80 scholarships to sophomores and juniors pursuing careers related to the environment.  This award provides $5,000 towards undergraduate expenses.  Competitive applicants will have a 3.0+ GPA, demonstrated leadership and service related to the environment, and clear graduate school plans and career aspirations.  The Udall also provides awards for American Indian students planning careers in tribal policy or tribal health care.  OSU may nominate up to 6 students for this award.

Gates Cambridge Scholarship

  • The Gates Cambridge Trust enables outstanding students to study at the University of Cambridge. Annually, 40 U.S. students are awarded the scholarships, which fully fund the proposed program of graduate study (usually 1-4 years). To be competitive for this award you must have high GPA and GRE scores, demonstrated intellectual ability, leadership capacity, and the desire to use knowledge to contribute to society. Students must apply to and be accepted by Cambridge. The Gates Cambridge scholarship application is a supplement within the actual admissions application.

Jacob K. Javits Fellowship

  • The Department of Education awards approximately 50 fellowships to students pursuing terminal degrees (PhD/MFA) in the arts, humanities and social sciences. Competitive applicants will have a strong GPA (3.7+), high GRE scores, and well-defined graduate plans and career goals.  Candidates must show financial need by filling out the Federal Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The award provides up to four years of funding, including tuition/fees and a stipend for living expenses.  Students may apply as seniors or first-year graduate students.

James Madison Graduate Fellowship

  • The James Madison Memorial Foundation awards 50 fellowships annually to applicants pursuing careers teaching high school history/government.  This award is open to graduating seniors and will fully fund a Master’s in Education.  It is also open to current high school teachers looking to earn a Master’s in History or Government. National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship

  • The NSF Graduate Research Fellowships are awarded to approximately 1,000 graduating seniors and first- or second-year graduate students with considerable research accomplishments and definitive plans to pursue graduate study and research. Students must have a strong academic record, high GRE scores, and significant research experience. The fellowship fully funds up to three years of graduate school, including educational tuition & fees, as well as a stipend for living expenses.

Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship

  • Scholarships are available for students with at least two years of college-level coursework who are interested in promoting goodwill and cross-cultural understanding while studying abroad. Students will enroll directly into a foreign institution for one year of academic study, thus appropriate language skills will be necessary.   Students will apply directly through a local Rotary club, and deadlines vary with each group.  Please contact the Honors Collegium for assistance in selecting a Rotary club through which to apply.
